Mathematical Operations - Symbol Substitution

Symbol Substitution: In these type of problems the symbols are to be substituted with another symbol as given in the question. After substitution we will solve the expression given in the question and will then perform the calculations accordingly.

Illustration: If + means -, - means times, times means div and div means +, then find the value of the expression:

252times 9-5 +32div92

A. 95                 B. 168                    C. 192               D. 200

Answer: D.

Solution:  Using the correct symbols, we have

252div 9times5 -32+92

=28times5 -32+92

=140 -32+92 = 232 -32=200

Hence the correct option is D

Illustration: If div means +, - means div, times means - and + means times, then find the value of

frac{(36times 4)-8times 4}{4+8times 2+16div1}

A. 0                 B. 8                    C. 12                D. 16

Answer: A.

Solution:  Using the correct symbols, we have

frac{(36times 4)-8times 4}{4+8times 2+16div1}

=frac{32div8-4}{32-32+1}=frac{4-4}{0+1}=0
